Mallenders and Sallenders is the common name for Hyperkeratosis, a skin condition caused by the over production of keratin which produces the hair.  This can appear on the back of horses legs, most commonly in horses with heavy feathers. The skin appears thickened, very itchy and crusty scale and scabs form. Often this condition is aggravated by an infestation of mites.  There is no cure but the condition can be easily managed. 

Symptoms

Itchy skin, biting and rubbing of the legs

Crusty Scabs and scale.

Weeping and oozing sores.

Thickened hard skin in later stages.

Treatment Organic
